care pathways for people with visual impairment across the lifespan: the theme of the ERN-EYE workshop"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The eighth ERN-EYE 2025 Scientific Workshop was held on October 6 and 7, 2025 at the <strong>Robert Hollman Foundation<\/strong> in Padua, Italy, bringing together clinicians, researchers, rehabilitation specialists, and patient representatives from across Europe.<br\/>Over the course of the two days, participants examined how to improve assessment, diagnosis, and care pathways for people with visual impairment from childhood through adulthood.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Day 1 &#8211; Childhood and transition to adult services<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>The first day was mainly devoted to <strong>visual impairment in children<\/strong> and managing the <strong>transition from pediatric to adult services<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>Speakers addressed the challenges and opportunities related to pediatric visual impairment, including:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The impact of visual impairment on neuropsychological development<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Advances in the assessment of visual function, such as the use of eye-tracking technology<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The methodologies of vision assessment in children with developmental disabilities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Early intervention strategies and understanding parents&#8217; needs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>In the afternoon, the focus shifted to<strong>accessibility in education<\/strong>, <strong>&#8220;reflection-based&#8221; rehabilitation approaches<\/strong>, and <strong>quality-of-life assessment tools<\/strong>, such as the European project <em><a href=\"https:\/\/fondazioneroberthollman.it\/en\/seemylife-the-european-project-on-quality-of-life-of-children-and-youth-with-visual-deficit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>SeeMyLife<\/strong><\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n<p>A session devoted to the <strong>transition<\/strong> from childhood to adulthood presented reference models drawn from <strong>ERN ReCONNET<\/strong>, Irish guidelines and practical case studies, culminating in a <strong>plenary discussion<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Day 2 &#8211; Care and rehabilitation in adulthood<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>During the second day, speakers covered the <strong>assessment and management of visual impairment in adulthood<\/strong>, focusing on:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Common clinical scenarios in adults with rare eye diseases<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reliable test methods for low and ultra-low vision<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Patient-reported outcome measures<em>(PROMS<\/em>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The role of mental health in the treatment of rare eye diseases<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>The session on <strong>Rehabilitation Pathways<\/strong> presented innovations in low vision services, the role of <strong>Eye Care Liaison Officers (ECLOs)<\/strong>, the results of the <strong>ERN-EYE Survey on low vision services<\/strong>, and advances in <strong>optical and digital aids<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>The day concluded with a discussion on <strong>new assistive technologies<\/strong>, <strong>hybrid models of telerehabilitation<\/strong>, and <strong>patients&#8217; perspectives<\/strong> on rehabilitation needs and expectations.<\/p>\n\n<p>David Keegan of the ERN EYE board said, &#8220;We had a fruitful and very inspiring meeting of the <strong>ERN-EYE<\/strong> group in Padua, Italy, at the <strong>Robert Hollman Foundation<\/strong>, hosted by our colleague <strong>Agnese Suppiej<\/strong>.<br\/>It was inspiring to hear about all the work being done in the field of inclusion and supportive therapies for children with <strong>low vision or blindness<\/strong>, including <strong>family support and education<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>The workshop concluded with a shared commitment to <strong>strengthen early diagnosis<\/strong>, <strong>improve coordination of care across all life stages<\/strong>, <strong>expand access to rehabilitation and assistive technologies<\/strong>, and <strong>put the patients&#8217; perspective at the center of<\/strong> care for Rare Eye Diseases in
